On-premises: Microsoft collaboration apps for iOS devices

The following article is addressed to those who are interested to collaborate in on-premises Microsoft environments using iOS devices. To be more specific – I will not discuss about Office 365. I will mention Office 365, but the article will be focused on the on-premises setup and how you can collaborate using iOS devices.

The main Microsoft iOS collaboration apps that can be used also with the on-premises environments are:

The on-premise environment for collaboration will be pretty much “around” the following main Microsoft technologies:

  • Microsoft SharePoint 2013
  • Microsoft Office Web Apps 2013
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 2013
  • Microsoft Lync Server 2013

Above I mentioned the version number for each iOS app. For sure these apps will receive new features, probably some functionalities will be removed, software bugs will also be fixed. Please be aware in my article I will discuss specifically about these versions.

This article will be a long one and will be updated in time. I will split it in multiple sections and please consider this post as being the “table of contents”.

  1. We have SharePoint installed on premise and I would like to use the Onedrive for Business app that points to the Onedrive for Business within my on premise SharePoint, is this possible or does Onedrive for Business app only point to Office 365?

    1. Yes is possible. OneDrive for Business App can work with SharePoint on-premise, but you will be able to sync the files only with your OneDrive site (MySite). In other words, even if we discuss about Office 365, or SharePoint on-premise, the OneDrive for Business App will be able to sync only with your personal site (in SP2013 known as OneDrive, in SP2010 known as MySite). OneDrive for Business App cannot sync with a teamsite (and this is happening for both: Office 365 and SharePoint on-premise).

      1. Thanks for your reply. I am using SP2013.

I have tried to login using the Onedrive for Business app, by entering my SharePoint URL, my username and password, but it is saying:

        Login Failed
Sorry, this app doesn’t support this type of authentication. Contact help desk for more information.

How much of the SharePoint URL path do I need to enter here?

        Thanks
        James
